PARIS, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- Gaz de France and Franco-Belgian utility Suez are mulling a tie-up to fight off a hostile bid by Italy's Enel for the big French company.

The move by Enel, a major electricity producer, sent Suez shares up sharply, the Financial Times said Friday.

Among the options being discussed by Gaz de France and Suez are a share swap and joint venture that could presage an eventual full merger.
