Britain stockpiles anti-bird flu treatment

LONDON, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- The British Health Department says it has stockpiled 4 million doses of an anti-bird flu treatment, officials said.

A health department official said Britain's reserve of anti-bird flu treatment was growing by 800,000 doses a month, and the 14.6 million target was likely to be reached in late summer, the Daily Telegraph reported Friday.

Although three people have contracted bird flu via infected birds in Turkey, British health authorities say bird flu does not spread from person to person. However, officials are making plans for dealing with a potential bird-flu pandemic.

"The level of risk has not changed," said a health official. "There is no human-to-human transmission. We have robust systems in place for monitoring this."
