NEW YORK, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- U.S retailers are planning aggressive sales the Monday after Christmas to make up for ho-hum sales this holiday shopping season.
Many retailers are counting on new shoppers armed with gift cards to turn around slower than expected sales, the New York Times reported Saturday.
Wal-Mart will be featuring sales on video games, DVD's and computer software, Coach plans to introduce a new set of jewel-studded handbags and Abercrombie & Fitch plans to preview its spring clothing line, although winter is only a few days old.
Many retailers plan to introduce new merchandise Monday to capitalize on the $18 billion given in gift cards this season, according to BigResearch.
With big discounts before Christmas now common, retailers no longer feature clearance sales to drum up excitement after Christmas because gift card holders are spending somebody else's money and are less worried about price.
