Researchers warn 'no real hangover cure'

LONDON, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- For those planning to imbibe some season's cheer, British researchers warn that the best way to avoid a hangover is to drink moderately.

The British drinking culture has spawned numerous "cures" for a hangover from banana milk shake to Mexican soup, but a survey of published trials of hangover preparations by the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, found neither conventional or alternative remedies appeared to have much effect, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Study leader Dr. Max Pittler said that none of trials was large enough to give convincing results, but three medicines did show some promise: the herb borage, a yeast-based supplement and tolfenamic acid.

However, the findings, published in the British Medical Journal, said that the most effective way to deal with a hangover was prevention via abstinence or moderation.
