WASHINGTON, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- While the avian flu virus, or bird flu, does not spread easily among humans, the U.S. government says pandemic preparedness is the same as for any emergency.
Governments around the world are working on plans in case bird flu mutates to a strain that does spread from person to person, but pandemic preparedness is being ready for emergencies in general, said Wanda Jones, Health and Human Services deputy assistant secretary.
"We think this has to be so complicated, but truly it doesn't," said Jones. "And it helps us no matter whether the disaster is manmade or completely natural and out of our control."
Jones, who's responsible for women's health programs, says women can help to get their families prepared.
"This includes stockpiling several days of emergency household supplies and agreeing on a meeting place if everyone must leave home."
