Bank can't find mortgage holders' data

CHICAGO, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- A computer tape containing data of about 2 million U.S. home mortgage customers of ABN Amro Mortgage Group Inc. has been reported missing.

ABN, a unit of LaSalle Bank Corp., said Friday the missing tape did not contain any data related to any LaSalle Bank personal or business accounts other than residential mortgages.

Data on the tape included residential mortgage customer names, account data, payment histories and Social Security numbers.

A package containing the tape was picked up by DHL from the company's Chicago data processing center on Nov. 18 and did not arrive at its intended destination at an Experian credit bureau facility in Allen, Texas. Various authorities have been notified.

"At this time, the company has no knowledge that the data on this tape has been misused," said ABN, which has begun notifying customers.

It also said it is offering affected mortgage holders free enrollment in a credit monitoring service for 90 days. Once they enroll, they will be notified of any activity related to their credit report.
