NEW YORK, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- The number of people infected with the AIDS virus continues to rise even though some countries have made progress, the United Nations reported.

The annual report said the biggest increase in AIDS cases was in southeast Asia and eastern Europe, although sub-Saharan Africa continues to be the area where the rates of infection with HIV is highest. There were an estimated 40.3 million people around the world infected with HIV in 2005 and more than 3 million people died of AIDS during the year, including 500,000 children.

"It is clear that a rapid increase in the scale and scope of HIV prevention programs is urgently needed," said UNAIDS Executive Director Dr. Peter Piot. "We must move from small projects with short-term horizons to long-term, comprehensive strategies."

The report also described successful prevention HIV/AIDS programs in many countries.
