New diet pill shows fewer side effects

BOSTON, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- A new diet pill shows promise as a weight-loss aid with fewer side effects than existing ones.

A report in the New England Journal of Medicine said that in one trial people who took Acomplia lost an average of 19 pounds and three inches off their waist lines.

While the drug appears to have fewer side effects than Xenical or Merida and poses less risk of heart disease and diabetes, researchers warn that it is not one to be taken lightly. Jean-Pierre Depres of the Quebec Heart Institute, lead author of the report, told the Chicago Sun-Times Acomplia is "not a drug to take to look good in a swimming suit."

Acomplia works on the same brain pathway as marijuana but depresses appetite instead of increasing it.

Another study in the same issue of the New England Journal of Medicine reported that patients on Meridia who exercised lost far more weight than those who only took the pill.
