MARIETTA, Ga., Nov. 15 (UPI) -- The U.S. Air Force has awarded Lockheed Martin Corp. a $2.9 billion contract to build 24 F/A-22 stealth fighter aircraft.

The order for the 5th generation jets, which will be produced through November 2007, brings to 107 the number contracted for the Air Force, Lockheed said Tuesday.

To date, 53 aircraft have been delivered to the Air Force and 66 have completed final assembly. The Air Force is flying the F/A-22 Raptor at four bases across the United States and is preparing for "Initial Operational Capability" in December with the 1st Fighter Wing's 27th Fighter Squadron at Langley Air Force Base, Va.

Lockheed called the F/A-22 Raptor "the world's most advanced fighter in production today."
