TORONTO, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- Air Canada signed a contract Wednesday to buy at least $6 billion worth of new Boeing Co. commercial passenger jets.

Boeing booked firm orders for 18 long-range 777 jets and 14 mid-sized 787 Dreamliners, which carry a combined list price of about $6 billion.

Air Canada also has the option to increase the number of 777s being ordered from 18 to 36, and the number of 787s being ordered from 14 to 60.

Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2007.

"We estimate the fuel burn and maintenance cost savings alone on the 787 to be approximately 30 percent versus the 767s they will replace," Robert Milton, head of ACE Aviation Holdings Inc., Air Canada's parent.
