Novartis may build U.S. flu vaccine plant

NEW YORK, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Novartis AG, the Swiss company that is buying U.S. flu vaccine maker Chiron Corp., says it may build a vaccine plant in the United States.

The suggestion from Novartis chief executive's appeared to be a response to U.S. concerns that Novartis' purchase of Chiron would leave the United States dependent on foreign drugs for vital flu vaccine supplies, The New York Times said Thursday.

Currently the only flu vaccine plant in the United States is owned by Sanofi-Aventis SA of France. California-based Chiron has plants in Britain, Germany and Italy.
