NEW YORK, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- The National Retail Federation estimates half of all U.S. consumers plan to celebrate Halloween this year by spending about $48.48 each on merchandise.
The average to be spent on candy is $18.07, and in total consumers are expected to spend more than $3.3 billion during the Halloween season, up to 5.4 percent higher than last year, reported the Appleton (Wis.) Post-Crescent.
"Consumers are pulling out all of the stops when it comes to decorating their homes and yards and wearing elaborate costumes, making Halloween an important holiday for retailers," said Tracy Mullin, president and chief executive officer of the National Retail Federation.
More young adults will be celebrating with parties and costumes and the NRF estimated young adult average spending will increase this year by 30 percent, from $38.90 to $50.75.
