TEMPE, Ariz., Oct. 5 (UPI) -- The U.S. service sector grew last month, but it did so more slowly than expected, an industry group said Wednesday.

The Institute of Supply Management said its index of non-manufacturing activity in September fell to 53.3 percent from 65 in August.

The weak growth stemmed from softness in numerous sectors, largely the result of Hurricane Rita, an ISM spokesman said.

"New orders, employment, new export orders and imports ... increased at slower rates. Only eight of 17 non-manufacturing industry sectors report increased activity in September compared to 13 that reported increased activity in August. There were reports of increased activity regarding construction and construction-related items."
