SURESNES, France, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- The chief executive of France's Havas SA advertising agency Wednesday said the company's chairman does not speak for Havas.
Specifically, Havas' Philippe Wahl said Chairman Vincent Bollore's recent share purchases of British rival Aegis Group PLC -- and accompanying statements -- had exactly nothing to do with Havas itself, the Financial Times reported Wednesday.
Bollore has boosted his stake in Aegis to 12.63 percent in recent weeks.
There has been speculation Bollore might be planning to use his influence at Aegis to induce a sale of its smaller buying network, Vizeum, to Havas.
That prompted British regulators to ask Havas for clarification about its intentions regarding Aegis.
"At the request of the U.K. Takeover Panel, Philippe Wahl, chief executive officer of Havas, wishes to clarify that these statements were made by (Mr.) Bollore in his capacity as chief executive of Groupe Bollore in relation to its investments in Havas and Aegis respectively. Havas confirms that these statements were not made in Bollore's capacity as Chairman of Havas."
