SEATTLE, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- Alaska Airlines plans to inspect all its MD-80 planes to make sure the jackscrew assemblies in the tail are properly lubricated.
A crash in 2000 that killed 88 people was blamed on threads that sheared in the assembly because of excessive wear and lack of grease. The Seattle Times reports that three mechanics for the airline say that they found an unlubricated jackscrew on Jan. 10 on an MD-80.
On the MD-80, the jackscrew controls the angle of flight.
Alaska Airlines Chief Executive Officer Bill Ayer ordered the inspection of the airline's 26 MD-80s on Thursday. The Federal Aviation Administration has also announced an investigation into the mechanics' allegations.
