BERLIN, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- A top European Union official is suggesting Germany be disciplined for continuing to violate EU fiscal policy.
Joaquin Almunia, the EU commissioner for economic and monetary affairs, noted Berlin has run a federal budget deficit that is more than 3 percent beyond its gross domestic product for three years in a row, Deutsche Welle reported Monday.
Under the terms of the pact that binds the 12 euro-zone countries, Germany could be fined up to $3.6 billion for such fiscal conduct, Almunia said.
Last March, Berlin led a successful charge -- supported by Paris -- to weaken the rules of the pact's enforcement provisions, which Germany helped create 1997.
