Companies team for technologies

NEW YORK, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- The European Union's antitrust commissioner has decided to evaluate mergers as her U.S. counterparts do -- checking how consumers will be affected.
Neelie Kroes said the EU wouldn't keep standing in the way of companies that dominate their markets just because competitors may be damaged, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday.
Kroes, in a New York speech, said the EU's emerging standard was whether consumers would be damaged, an approach that meshes with the United States but contrasts with standards used by her predecessor, Mario Monti.
"I like aggressive competition, including by dominant companies," Kroes said. "I don't care if it may hurt competitors, as long as it ultimately benefits consumers."
