ROME, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has urged the head of Italy's central bank to resign in an effort to stave off a political crisis.
Berlusconi's demand to Antonio Fazio came after the resignation of Domenico Siniscalco as finance minister. Siniscalco stepped down in protest at Fazio's refusal to resign.
Fazio is accused of abusing his office by favoring domestic banks over foreign bidders attempting to gain a foothold in Italy. But despite growing pressure over several weeks, he has resisted calls to quit.
Berlusconi, who previously refused to condemn Fazio, now says Fazio's continuing presence at the bank's helm was "incompatible with the international credibility" of the country, The Australian reported.
The prime minister acted quickly to replace Siniscalco, appointing Giulio Tremonti, a former finance minister who quit his post in the wake of a scandal last year.
