India's PM vows to lower tariffs

NEW YORK, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- India's prime minister has assured U.S. business leaders that he will lower tariffs, the Economic Times reported Thursday.

Manmohan Singh, meeting in New York with officials of ExxonMobil, Citicorp, Pepsico and other companies, vowed to reduce tariffs to levels comparable with other members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

U.S. business leaders expressed concern about the influence of left-wing parties in Singh's coalition on foreign direct investments, particularly by U.S. companies.
