Huge mall to more than double in size

BLOOMINGTON, Minn., Sept. 14 (UPI) -- The Mall of America, one of the world's largest indoor shopping centers, is about to get 5.6 million-square-feet bigger.

The owners plan to spend about $1 billion adding the extra space, which will include a 6,000-seat performing arts center, three or four hotels, a skating rink, a space for touring museum exhibits, up to 300 condominiums and more upscale shops and restaurants, American City Business Journals said Wednesday.

Officials hope to break ground on the expansion of the mall, which already covers 4.2 million square feet of Bloomington, Minn., next year.

The mall currently has 520 shops and a "family theme" park.
