Milk may help prevent tooth decay

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- A University of California at Los Angeles School of Dentistry study shows milk helps build strong teeth and may help prevent tooth decay.

"Milk has the right ingredients for promoting good dental health," says dentist Gaby Cosgrove. "Besides calcium, milk contains multiple proteins critical for oral health, like casein, which prevents cavity-causing bacteria from sticking to the tooth surface, as well as antibacterials that promote good oral health overall."

The study found milk helps to prevent the single most common chronic childhood disease among California children -- early childhood tooth decay.

"Over half of California's children ages 6 to 8 have untreated cavities," said Cosgrove. "Parents can help children get a clean check up by mandating milk in their kids' diets and visiting the dentist twice a year."
