U.S. vehicle output, sales are sliding

SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Aug. 26 (UPI) -- U.S. car sales and North American vehicle production are falling, industry groups said Friday.

North American vehicle output this week will be an estimated 334,887 units, down 2.4 percent from the previous week, said WardsAuto.com.

It noted 343,219 cars and trucks were built last week in Canada, the United States and Mexico, and that year-to-date North American output is now about 0.9 percent off the comparable 2004 period.

Meanwhile, Edmunds.com said the combined monthly U.S. market share for General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler AG is estimated to drop to 55.5 percent in August, down from 61 percent in July.

Edmunds.com predicts Chrysler's new car market share will rise to 13.1 percent this month, up from 12.5 percent in August 2004 but down from 13.3 percent in July.

Ford's market share will increase to 19.3 percent of new car sales in August, up from 17.3 percent in August 2004 and 18.9 percent in July.

But GM will lose market share, declining to 23.1 percent from 27.9 percent in August 2004.
