BERLIN, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- The average German drinks roughly 34 quarts of beer a year, less than two decades ago, which has caused German breweries to alter their product lines.
Brewers are trying to meet the new trend with alternate products: Mixed drinks such as beer combined with coke, or beer with lemonade, so-called "mild beers," which sell well, particularly during the warm. summer months.
The mild beers have doubled their market share in Germany since 2001, the daily Die Welt reported Friday.
They appeal most strongly to customers under 35 as they lend beer "a younger image," Kerstin Raschke, spokeswoman of the German brewery Veltins, told the newspaper.
The German mild beer favorite remains the "Radler" -- half beer, half Sprite. It occupies roughly half of the entire mild beer market, the newspaper said.
