Romney defends morning-after pill veto

BOSTON, July 26 (UPI) -- Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who once supported the landmark Roe vs. Wade decision, now says each state should decide whether to allow legalized abortion.

Romney outlined his abortion position in an editorial in Tuesday's Boston Globe, one day after vetoing a bill that would have expanded women's access to the so-called morning-after pill. Opponents call it an "abortion" pill, saying it could kill an existing fetus. Supporters say the medication prevents an egg from being released by the ovaries, and is therefore not an "abortion" pill.

"I am pro-life," Romney wrote in the opinion piece. "I believe that abortion is the wrong choice, except in cases of incest, rape and to save the life of the mother. I wish the people of America agreed, and that the laws of our nation could reflect that view."

However, supporters accused Romney of trying to burnish his conservative credentials for a possible run for U.S. president.

Massachusetts legislative leaders said they would override Romney's veto of the measure that would allow pharmacists to hand out the pill without a prescription and require hospitals to offer it to rape victims.
