CHICAGO, July 25 (UPI) -- The Teamsters and the Service Employees International Union bolted from the AFL-CIO Monday, saying organized labor must pay more attention to organizing.
Teamsters President James P. Hoffa said in a statement his union's decision to withdraw from the 13-million-member labor federation was "reached through a lengthy and thoughtful process." The Teamsters have about 1.4 million members and SEIU about 1.8 million members.
The unions were among four boycotting the AFL-CIO convention in Chicago to form a dissident group called the Change to Win Coalition.
Unite/Here, which represents hotel, restaurant and textile workers and the United Food and Commercial Workers also are not attending the annual convention.
AFL-CIO President John Sweeney, who has been accused of relying too much on politics, said it is fundamentally wrong to use the issues affecting working people for a power struggle.
