SMYRNA, Tenn., June 17 (UPI) -- Nissan North America will build a hybrid version of its Altima sedan in Smyrna, Tenn., where it already employs about 6,700 people.

The move is expected to bring more high-tech automotive suppliers to the area, even if it does not mean new hiring by the Japanese carmaker, the Nashville Tennessean reported Friday.

Hybrid vehicles use an electric motor with a gasoline engine to greatly boost fuel efficiency, in some cases to near 60 miles per gallon.

Nissan will rely on parts licensed from Toyota Motor Co., which also plans to build a hybrid version of its Camry sedan in Kentucky next year.

Automotive News, a trade publication, said Nissan and Toyota each expect to produce 50,000 hybrid vehicles in the United States, starting this year.
