NEW YORK, May 24 (UPI) -- The wholesale price of crude oil for July delivery closed up Tuesday at $49.67 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
The rise reflected U.S. refiners calculations about volumes that will be needed during the summer driving season, analysts said.
In London, the price of a barrel of Brent crude rose slightly to $48.71.
London's Center for Global Energy Studies noted the world's oil cartel is divided on whether to reduce output to prevent a further drop in prices as global supplies grow, the Financial Times reported.
"Although Saudi Arabia has said it intends to maintain production levels over the summer, others in the organization are calling for the over-production to be reined in," the CGE said Monday.
