BAGHDAD, May 19 (UPI) -- Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi visited Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, Iraq's highest Shiite religious authority, Thursday in the holy city of Najaf.
Kharrazi, who started an unprecedented visit to Iraq Wednesday, refused to make any comments after his first encounter with the Shiite religious leader.
He said earlier that Baghdad and Tehran agreed to establish a higher joint committee to be headed by Deputy Iranian President Mohammed Aref and Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari to boost bilateral relations and cooperation at all levels, security, economic, political and cultural.
Kharrazi, a Shiite, held talks with senior Iraqi officials, including President Jalal Talabani, Premier Jaafari and Foreign Minister Hoshiar Zibari.
