Combined health and injury premiums will cost contractors $5.10 a month per construction worker.

Nearly 10,000 migrant workers died in work-related accidents during the past five years in Beijing, accounting for 20 percent of all worker deaths in the capital, the newspaper said.

Liu Zhaoyuan, chief engineer of Beijing's Municipal Construction Commission, said the city "is witnessing its busiest construction period since the founding of the PRC 1949."

State media reports work is under way to add more than 120 million square meters of new building space in Beijing this year.
