Sears warns of 500 job cuts at HQ

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill., April 8 (UPI) -- Sears Holdings Corp. warns that 500 employees at its Illinois headquarters could lose their jobs.

The Chicago Tribune reports that the number has been revised upward in the past week. Under Illinois law, workers must be given 60 days notice of plant closings or mass layoffs.

Sears Holdings was formed by the merger of Sears and Kmart. About 2,000 people now work at Kmart's headquarters in Troy, Mich., while 4,000 work at Sears headquarters in Hoffman Estates, Ill.

The company has not announced the details of how its headquarters staffs will be merged.
