Texas sues big broadband phone comany

AUSTIN, Texas, March 23 (UPI) -- Texas is suing the nation's largest Internet-based telephone service provider over a 911 call that simply could not be connected.

A Houston woman used Vonage, a New Jersey broadband phone company, to to make an emergency call when two men attacked and shot her parents, the Houston Chronicle reported Wednesday. But all she got was a recording saying it couldn't be done.

Attorney General Greg Abbott said Vonage failed to advise the woman and other Texas customers they could not handle 911 calls.

He filed suit Tuesday against Vonage under the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act, seeking injunctions to stop the company from misrepresenting the type of emergency telephone service it offers and the fact the 911 dialing feature is not automatically included.

The suit says Vonage's TV commercials and brochures deceive consumers and its salespeople fail to disclose the 911 information.
