BMW plans big new investment in Mini plant

OXFORD, England, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- German automaker BMW will invest $187 million in its British Mini production operations, the BBC reported Wednesday.

The new money, which comes less than four years after the re-launched Mini hit the market, means some 200 new jobs at the Oxford factory, as well as modernized machinery and a new body shell production building.

All told, the new investment could raise output from last year's 189,000 to more than 200,000 cars in 2007, the company said.

BMW invested about $526 million to launch the wildly popular car in 2001.
