Report: Sirius, XM talking merger

NEW YORK, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Merger talks between U.S. satellite radio rivals Sirius and XM have been underway recently, the New York Post reported Wednesday.

While the two companies have talked before about merging, recent discussions appear to be animated by Sirius' hiring of former Viacom President Mel Karmazin in November, the newspaper said.

"Mel is a roll-up guy, a deal guy," said one source close to Karmazin.

Post sources say a deal could be at least a year away.

Neither Sirius nor XM would comment about possible talks.
