Foreigners still like U.S. securities

WASHINGTON, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Treasury Department data show that foreign investors sharply boosted their holdings of U.S. bonds in November.

The government said foreigners bought $99.7 billion of U.S. securities, which includes stocks and bonds, in November, up from a revised $65.4 billion in October, the International Herald Tribune reported Wednesday.

Most of those purchases were of Treasury bonds. Common stock investment by foreigners in November accounted for $14.5 billion of the $99.7 billion total.

The news lifted the dollar's value and eased concerns about whether foreigners would keep enabling Washington to finance its record current account deficit through cash inflows.

The November data reversed a trend of declining foreign interest in U.S. securities.
