DETROIT, Ill., Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Toyota will cease production of its slow-selling Echo subcompact and launch two new Euro-style small cars in the U.S. market as 2006 models.

The Japanese automaker only sold 3,899 of the egg-shaped Echos in 2004, down from top sales of nearly 49,000 units in 2000. Sales were down 85 percent last year.

Meanwhile, the Toyota Camry retained its title as the best-selling car in the United States. Toyota's youth-oriented Scion brand sold nearly 100,000 vehicles.

The Detroit News said the replacement for the $11,000 Echo would come from several small sedans and hatchbacks Toyota markets in Europe.

Toyota CEO Fujio Cho told reporters at Detroit's North American International Auto Show the automaker plans to open new factories in North America after investing more than $17 billion to challenge the Big Three automakers.
