CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Jan. 3 (UPI) -- Industries must form alliances to compete for spots in the new 'digital home' a report by tech research company Forrester Research, of Massachusetts, shows.
In a digital home, devices connect to one of two networks: a closed, wired entertainment network for digital TV and video on demand, and an open, wireless data network for Web browsing, e-mail, music, photos, and VoIP, or Internet telephone service.
"While some industries are better positioned for success, all must focus on capturing and controlling new revenue streams through key cross-industry partnerships and acquisitions," Forrester said.
Some potential alliances include:
-- A joint venture between the National Football League and TV network FOX, where sports fans can select camera angles and split-screen content.
-- Sony and Clear Channel working together to offer personalized digital radio.
-- Google and TV Guide joining together to deliver personalized search services.
-- Microsoft and BellSouth, Verizon, and SBC in partnership to provide an operating platform for Internet-protocol TV.
-- Disney acquiring sports game creator Electronic Arts, so the Disney/ESPN sports brand will rule on PCs, TV, and game consoles.
-- Apple acquiring TiVo, creating a service platform for TV and on-demand video.
