WASHINGTON, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- U.S. regulators have begun a formal investigation of Marsh & McLennan, the world's largest insurance broker.

The Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating investments by company executives and directors in partnerships set up by the company, the New York Times reported Thursday.

Marsh was accused of bid-rigging and steering business in a lawsuit filed two months ago by the New York attorney general.

The company vowed to cooperate with the SEC probe.
