Singapore to boost ties with Indonesia

JAKARTA, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong says his nation is eager to engage in economic cooperation with Indonesia.

Lee made the statement Tuesday at the end of a two day meeting in Jakarta. He told reporters he has no hesitation saying economic cooperation was the area on which the two countries could move forward most quickly, The Straits Times reported.

Lee met Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, as well as several key government officials, and expressed confidence that Indonesia was moving in the right direction.

He said Singaporean economic ministers were already in contact about new and existing areas for joint cooperation. Those areas include an investment guarantee agreement and deepening cooperation in tourism and civil aviation.

The prime minister noted the opportunity existed for creating more flights between Singapore and Indonesia, to take advantage of the growth in tourism traffic.
