Thai shampoo battle comes out a draw

BANGKOK, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Consumer goods giants Procter & Gamble and Unilever have ended a clash over anti-dandruff shampoo advertising in Thailand.

Legal claims and counter-claims filed by the two sides had sought nearly $30 million, but the final settlement involved no monetary compensation, the Bangkok Post reported Saturday.

Company executives have said the corporations mutually decided to withdraw legal claims involving a 2003 P&G commercial comparing the effectiveness of P&G's Head & Shoulders and Unilever's Clinic Clear shampoos.

Unilever began the legal battle in September 2003 by filing a lawsuit against P&G to the tune of $11.3 million. P&G responded with a countersuit seeking $18 million.

Head & Shoulders is the world's best-selling anti-dandruff shampoo with a global market share of 29 percent, compared with 6.2 percent for Clinic Clear, the Post said. However, Clinic Clear currently sells more than Head & Shoulders in Thailand.
