Sun settles Kodak patent suit

NEW YORK, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Sun Microsystems says it will pay Kodak $92 million to settle a high-profile patent suit involving Sun's Java programming technology.

A federal judge had ruled parts of Java infringe on Kodak's patents, clearing the way for a trial in which Kodak was seeking $1 billion in damages.

Sun did not admit or deny the allegations under the settlement, which will give it a license to Kodak's Java-related patents, the Wall Street Journal said Friday.

The agreement reportedly also heads off future Kodak suits against Sun customers and other technology companies that have licensed Java from Sun.

But, a Sun spokeswoman says it does not protect some Java-based products not licensed from the company. These include Jboss, an application server developed by a community of programmers under a process known as "open-source" development.
