Motorola cuts 1,000 jobs

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., Sept. 28 (UPI) -- U.S. electronics giant Motorola said Tuesday it will cut 1,000 jobs and take a charge of $50 million for severance costs.

The company is making the cuts as it prepares to spin off its chip-making business.

The reductions will be made at the company's headquarters in Schaumburg, Ill., and other locations worldwide.

The cuts are part of company's effort to reduce costs as Motorola tries to win market share from competitor Nokia Oyj of Finland.

Motorola currently employs 88,000 and has offices in 130 countries.

Businesses affected by the cuts include commercial, government and industrial solutions, electronic systems and broadband communications, Motorola said.
