LIMA, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Residents of the northern Peruvian town of Cajamarca remained on strike Wednesday in protest against golden mining operations in the area.
Local authorities and government officials negotiated with residents to return to their jobs through Tuesday night with no success. The residents do not work for the mine.

Workers are protesting efforts by U.S.-based mining company Newmont Mining Corp. -- majority owners of the Yanacocha mine -- to extract its gold, alleging the process contaminates the water supply.
Operations at Yanacocha were suspended last week following days and weeks of protests by local residents, particularly poor farmers.
