DETROIT, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- The head of the Teamsters union is calling for a U.S. government-run healthcare system, the Detroit Free Press reported Tuesday.

"Rising health-care costs are causing a loss of jobs and making America less competitive," James P. Hoffa said Monday in a speech to the Detroit Economic Club.

"We need a national health-care system, and we need it now," Hoffa said, calling for a joint effort by management and labor to come up with policy prescriptions. "I challenge each one of you to join this coalition. We can't afford to wait any longer."

Hoffa noted companies that provide health care for their employees have faced double-digit cost increases. Two-thirds of large employers have increased employee co-pays in the last year alone, he said.
