WASHINGTON, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- The head of the International Monetary Fund is planning his first trip to Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, and Chile, the IMF said Wednesday.
It will be IMF Managing Director Rodrigo de Rato's first visit to South America since assuming the top spot at the international agency earlier this year.
De Rato will attend the Sept. 13 finance ministers' meeting of the Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation in Santiago. His stops in Buenos Aires and Montevideo will take place before the APEC meeting, while his visit to Brasilia will be after the meeting.
De Rato will meet with senior economic officials in each country to discuss their respective economies, the IMF said.
Brazil and Argentina are two of the IMF's biggest and most controversial borrowers.
