Act limits security firms' liability

WASHINGTON, June 18 (UPI) -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced Friday the first four security technology products to be protected from liability under the Safety Act.

"It is vitally important that this nation have the technologies that are necessary to protect us from a terrorist attack," Undersecretary for Science and Technology Charles McQueary told a Washington briefing.

Congress created the Safety Act in 2002 to encourage the development of such technologies by limiting the liability of companies that develop certain homeland security related products.

Friday's newly certified products include a terrorism threat analysis computer system made by Lockheed Martin, a Northrop Grumman biohazard detection system, a Teledyne Brown Engineering tool for neutralizing bombs and an explosives detection service provided by Michael Stapleton Associates.

The certification will limit the manufacturers' liability to claims related to an act of terrorism, as well as limiting the liability of companies that use their products.
