EasyJet seeks to cut all check-in staff

LONDON, May 31 (UPI) -- Britain's EasyJet wants to replace check-in staff with automated kiosks in the latest cost-cutting drive in the no-frills airline industry.

Last week, EasyJet claimed an industry first with all 108 passengers on a flight from Nottingham East Midlands Airport to Prague, Czech Republic, checking in using the self-service kiosks, the Financial Times reported Monday.

"In due course, this could revolutionize the airport process in the way that the Internet revolutionized the booking process," said Ray Webster, EasyJet's chief executive.

The airline said the system would be rolled out in other airports across its network, which would "ultimately see kiosk-only check-in."

EasyJet has already reduced the number of toilets on its new Boeing aircraft from three to two to squeeze in an extra seat. It said that since there were no free drinks or food on board, fewer toilets were needed.
