Chinese TV makers set up plants overseas

BEIJING, May 24 (UPI) -- China's TV makers, seeking to evade anti-dumping tariff penalties in the United States, are setting up more plants abroad.

Konka Group Co Ltd., a leading color TV maker, has set up a manufacturing base in Mexico, the China's official Xinhua news agency reported Monday. Konka already has plants in India and Indonesia in addition to three at home.

"The anti-dump lawsuit brought by the United States last year played a decisive role, giving the incentive to establish a Mexico-based manufacturing company," said Chang Qiling, Konka general manager.

The U.S. Department of Commerce, in a ruling ruling last month, imposed additional tariffs ranging from 4.35 percent to 24.48 percent against 10 Chinese TV makers, including Konka.

"Domestic colour TV makers thus can hardly reap any profit from product exports to the U.S. market," Chang said.

The United States is the biggest exporter of color TVs.

Anti-dumping rules, a trade tool which is often used internationally, has always been a hard nut for China to crack, despite its rising TV set exports, Xinhua said.
