EU, France closer to Alstom bail-out deal

PARIS, May 17 (UPI) -- The European Union and France said Monday they might reach an agreement on bailing out France's Alstom before the end of this week.

The French engineering firm, which built the high-speed TGV railway system, is running out of cash, and the French government wants to prevent the company from being broken up.

European Competition Commissioner Mario Monti said after his meeting with French Finance Minister Nicolas Sarkozy that "the basis for an accord" should be finalized before the end of the week, and the news boosted Alstom's share price Monday.

The French government has prepared a $3.8 billion rescue plan for the company since last September, but it needs approval from the EU.
