Motorola, Samsung making world cell phone

ATLANTA, March 23 (UPI) -- Motorola and Samsung Electronics are racing to offer U.S. cell phone users seamless service around the world, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

At a major trade show in Atlanta Monday, Motorola and Samsung both introduced cellphones that allow many U.S. travelers to talk throughout Western Europe, vast parts of Asia and Latin America.

Right now, more than half of U.S. cell phone users can't use their phones most places abroad because of incompatible technologies.

About 75 million U.S. cell phone subscribers use so-called CDMA technology, whereas most of the rest of the world has opted for a technology referred to as GSM.

While some globe-trotting U.S. executives can already make and take calls overseas using their current phones, it's been mostly limited to customers of Cingular Wireless, which already uses GSM technology on its networks.

Verizon Wireless says it plans to offer the Samsung phone in the next few months.

It is not clear which company will offer the Motorola phone, which probably will not be available until year's end.
