LIMA, March 13 (UPI) -- Tensions over trade between Peru and the United States have broken into public view with comments by Peru's foreign trade minister.
U.S. officials have insisted Peru resolve a handful of legal disputes involving U.S. companies before free-trade treaty talks between the two nations can begin, the Latin American Post reported Saturday. But Peru's foreign trade minister rejected that demand.
"These conflicts cannot mark the bilateral and commercial agenda of Peru and the United States," Carlos Ferrero said.
The cases involve about 12 of some 450 U.S. companies doing business in Peru, Ferrero said.
Earlier this week, U.S. Ambassador Curtis Struble told a Peruvian congressional committee if the disputes are not soon resolved, Peru could lose its spot among Andean nations slated to begin free-trade talks with the United States.
Ferrero said Peru hopes to enter into free-trade talks in May, alongside Colombia, warning a derailment now would probably set negotiations back two or three years.
Some 27 percent of Peruvian exports go to the United States.
